More great stuff this week.  Marvel NOW! continues with a couple of new books, as well as a few getting their second issues.  DC gives us another chapter in Batman’s “Death of the Family” event as well as their big Superman crossover, “H’el on Earth”.  Here’s my favorite covers this week. 

Batwoman #14

The first time I saw J.H. Williams III art I immediately fell in love with it.  As you can see from the cover, his style and technique is pretty fantastic.  It’s what’s on the inside that really sets him apart though.  His page layouts are among the most unique and just plain awesome that I’ve seen.  I was worried when I found out he was going to be writing and drawing Batwoman at the same time, fearing that maybe the art would suffer.  He’s managed to do both well however, with only short break where we saw another artist.

Birds of Prey #14

DC’s team of super ladies has been a fun ride so far.  I’m not entirely surprised, I very much enjoyed Duane Swiercynski’s work at Marvel and he continues it here DC.  Along with more popular characters like Poison Ivy, Black Canary, and Batgirl, the book also utilizes some lesser known, and new characters to great effect.  Starling and Katana help round out the team and really add to the book’s draw.

Catwoman #14

We’re only in the second month of the “Death of the Family” story event and it’s already amazing.  Scott Snyder’s take on the Joker is one of the creepiest I’ve seen.  He’s still a clown that cracks jokes, but damn is he scary and vicious.  The next couple of months of Batman books are going to be pretty brutal.

Justice League #14

Cover by Tony S. Daniel

Justice League was the premier title when DC first announced the New 52.  A book drawn by Jim Lee is reason enough for people to get excited.  Add to that Geoff Johns as author and you get a pretty great creative team.  As can be expected Jim Lee didn’t stick around forever, but at least Tony Daniel is no slouch.  Geoff Johns has continued to pen some great stories, most notable the Shazam story that appeared in the last few issues.  In the coming months we’ll see the book crossing over with Aquaman for the “Throne of Atlantis” storyline.  I can’t wait.

Wonder Woman #14

Everyone knows Wonder Woman, but no one was reading Wonder Woman.  It was a problem that DC was having before the coming of the New 52.  It shouldn’t continue to be a problem because Brian Azzarello’s Wonder Woman is one of the best books they have in their lineup right now.  I’m a huge fan of mythology and this book really draws on Wonder Woman’s Greek mythology background.  Gods and Monsters play a huge role, and I’m enjoying every moment of it so far.

I may have said it before but I’ll say it again, Captain America is my favorite superhero.  This first issue marks a new era in the Captain America saga, one penned by Rick Remender.  I have thoroughly enjoyed everything of Remender’s I’ve read so far so I’m quite optimistic.  On a side note, just look at the Ryan Meinerding cover, it so freaking fantastic.

Deadpool #2

The elephant has a gun!  Just think about what a terrible situation that is to be in.  Even if you’re somehow able to disarm the elephant, it’s still an elephant!  I like this cover because it’s full of animals.

The Indestructible Hulk #1

I really enjoyed Jason Aaron’s Incredible Hulk when he first started writing it.  Towards the end of his run it really started to go off the rails though.  Hulk was fighting Russian space bears and Atlantean rednecks as a few examples.  Now Mark Waid is in charge and seeing what he’s been doing with Daredevil I think we’re in good hands.

Journey Into Mystery #646

I have such mixed feelings about this book!  On the one hand it’s great to see Marvel have another book with a female main character. On top of that I’m excited to see them focusing on such an under utilized character like Sif.  On the other hand Kieron Gillen’s Journey Into Mystery starring Kid Loki was one of my favorite books and I looked forward to it every month.  This book has a really tough act to follow.
