Dave is back FROM THE SEA!!! I don’t know if he was out for his annual mermaid hunt, or fighting giant squid, but hey, he’s funny! Continue reading
So, the Nerd-Base site has been up and running for almost a year and a half now. Sure, we don’t update as much as I’d like, but I like to think the things we do put here are excellent and worthwhile! People seem to love our PODCAST and Brian’s My Corner of the World series (making a long-awaited return today!), but I’m proud of what we’ve done. Every time I start to feel like the site and it’s content are losing a bit of steam, I just need a good reminder, and for a few years now, I’ve had this little gem. It’s helped me, it’ll help you too!!
Thanks for stopping by!!
We’ve got a lot of exciting content coming up, NEW videos, podcasts, and original content, plus we’re going to the Geek Creation Event, AnimeNext, and the big one, NYCC 2013!!! Stick around!
Here’s the trailer for the new Avengers cartoon on Disney XD. I liked the previous series, kind of sad they cancelled it. The design and appearance here doesn’t seem too different, but I’m not sure I like it as much, the odd, off proportions look a little too “kiddy”(?), like they’ve drawn action figures rather than comic book characters, then again, I didn’t think I’d like the previous cartoon either! I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see! What do you think?

Over the past month, I have gotten caught up on almost all the Marvel Now! line. I must say, oddly, that Matt Fraction’s two series, Hawkeye and FF (art by Mike & Laura Allred!!), are my favorites. They are what Continue reading

Unlike Batman/Bruce Wayne, Brian has taken a realistic journey from “The Pit” back home. It’s taken him a bit, but he’s stronger, faster, umm…smarter? Maybe?
Well, he’s definitely still entertaining as all get-out and back to making his fun original series for Nerd-Base!! Here’s the preview for his next episode!
How to begin here….
You think you’re a weirdo? A nerd? A true geek? Maybe, just maybe, you’re really just one of US. A Subgenius. Continue reading
I cannot easily or calmly express how excited I am for this film.
From the production description:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
Today, May 7th, 2013, a man whose impact on the imagination of billions, rivaling only that of Jim Henson, who it could even be said was himself influenced by him, Ray Harryhausen, has passed on.
Ray Harryhausen was the Special Effects legend behind some of the most fondly remembered and influential creations of the past century. He worked on some of the most beloved fantasy films ever made. I don’t think anyone familiar with his impact on cinema would argue that if it weren’t for Ray, films today would be nothing like we know them. Perhaps they would even be decidedly less wondrous. His imagination and dedication will live on forever.
Here’s a partial list of his more beloved films;
- The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953) (visual effects)
- It Came from Beneath the Sea (1955) (visual effects)
- The Animal World (1956) (effects technician)
- Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956) (special photographic, animation effects)
- 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957) (visual effects)
- The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) (associate producer, visual effects)
- The Three Worlds of Gulliver (1960) (visual effects)
- Mysterious Island (1961) (special visual effects)
- Jason and the Argonauts (1963) (associate producer, visual effects)
- First Men in the Moon (1964) (associate producer, visual effects)
- One Million Years B.C. (1966) (special visual effects)
- The Valley of Gwangi (1969) (associate producer, visual effects)
- The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1974) (producer, visual effects)
- Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977) (producer, visual effects)
- Clash of the Titans (1981) (producer, visual effects)
We haven’t had a “Top 10” post in a bit. Everyone seems to love those, but there’s so many out there, coming up with an original idea for them can be a bit daunting. But now I’ve an idea, and I’d like you, our readers to help out building this one. Why am I turning to you? Have you ever read the comments on the lists out there written solely by the authors? EVERYONE has their own advice. I don’t consider myself a definitive authority. Yes, I love comics, but I know there are plenty I’ve never read.
So, email me at info (at) nerd-base.com and let me know your favorite 1-shots!! Fantastic stand-alone comics that you’ve read that stuck with you. They could be part of a series, but not part of a story arc.
When submitting, please include a quick review, images if you have any, and a link to your own blog/page/twitter if you have one so I can add attribution to the entry. The team and I will check out the reviews and pick from there.
