Rurouni Kenshin

Rurouni Kenshin is my favorite anime of all time so warning – this may be a slightly biased movie review.  Having said that, I am also a purist and can dole out serious criticism.  For instance:

Utter crap.

Rurouni Kenshin is a good movie with some great qualities.  It respects the manga and anime by staying faithful to the main story, good acting, awesome action, and most of all, brilliant casting… but I’ll get back to that in a minute.

The basic story centers on Kenshin, a ronin repenting from his years as a master killer at the end of the Tokugawa era, about ten years Continue reading

‘Avengers Assemble’ trailer has just dropped!

Logo-Avengers-Assemble

Here’s the trailer for the new Avengers cartoon on Disney XD. I liked the previous series, kind of sad they cancelled it. The design and appearance here doesn’t seem too different, but I’m not sure I like it as much, the odd, off proportions look a little too “kiddy”(?), like they’ve drawn action figures rather than comic book characters, then again, I didn’t think I’d like the previous cartoon either! I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see! What do you think?

Game of Thrones Theme on Accordian!

Matt DallowMany moons ago, I started hanging out with a young lady who would become a staple in b-movies and the horror scene/circuit, Ruby LaRocca. One day, she asked me to come by and introduced me to her roommate and his theremin. I was impressed, not not as much as when he pulled out an accordion and blew my mind with a few covers that I’d have never pictured on what is generally considered to be such a whimsical instrument. Well, that fellow’s name is Matt Dallow. If you frequent the NYC/Brooklyn underground/busking music scene, you very likely may have run into him. Whether it be solo or playing with Amour Obscur, he’s a pretty stand-out fellow and just a few moments ago he posted something that blew my mind again. Something that upon listening makes perfect sense, but at first will have you scratching your head.

Here’s the theme music to HBO’s Game of Thrones played on accordion by Matt Dallow (check below the video after the cut for his contact info) Continue reading

Late to the Party: ALIAS

There was a lot going on in September of 2001. So you’ll have to forgive me (and most of the still grieving world) for ignoring J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi espionage serial, ALIAS, a crime for which I now repent wholeheartedly. Now that the series has come to Netflix Instant Streaming, I felt compelled to give it a shot considering its impressive pedigree.

You can’t blame me for taking this long to catch up. It’s an easy show to dismiss. Just look at this promo pic.

SD-6? More like SD-Sex… am I right?

Sight unseen, the romcom-ready, model-thin Jennifer Garner would seem to be the worst possible choice to lead up a gritty, whip-smart super spy series about a double agent working to bring down a criminal spy organization from the inside.

Syd’s a one woman Spice Girls: Slutty, Sultry, Pouty and Angsty Spice.

Taken out of context her array of wigs and accents seems doomed to failure but, and this is very important, ALIAS was created by J.J. “Fucking” Abrams. The same J.J. Abrams who gave us capitalized classics like LOST, FRINGE and revitalized the STAR TREK universe by sheer force of will. The dude knows exactly what he’s doing and Jennifer Garner’s performance as Sydney Bristow here is enough to wipe my mind of the misery of Daredevil, Elektra and 13 Going on 30 forever.
