The Doctor Meets Sherlock Holmes

tumblr_static_cyi7y0uvijw4gwogksckgw8okIf you’re a Whovian and a Sherlockian, then you’re like me and a vast majority of the fans – you would kill for a crossover. Some very talented Wholockians made our dreams come true!

‘A recently regenerated and emotionally shattered Doctor on his last regeneration, arrives in London and becomes the unexpected companion to Sherlock Holmes. The Doctor and Sherlock are initially teamed up by Scotland Yard in an effort to stop Jack the Ripper’s murderous trail of terror. But could there be an even greater evil at work in Victorian England?’

It may not exactly be David Tennant or Benedict Cumberbatch, but why not use your imagination and pretend!? As I sat down to take a listen to the first episode, Continue reading

Hawk The Slayer: The Best or Worst D&D Film Ever Made?

Hawk Banner 2

Yes, I’m well aware that Hawk the Slayer is NOT in fact, a Dungeons & Dragons movie. However, it IS more like actual D&D (at the time at least) than that weird movie we did get. A Wayans? Really?  Anyway, this isn’t about that movie where we all secretly hoped we’d get to see a topless Thora Birch riding a dragon. No. This is about something far, far….better?

coverHawk the Slayer is one of those odd little films that managed to catch your eye while you were perusing the genre racks at your local video rental store (when they were still around). It had an epic-looking poster that looked more like the popular “Choose Your Own Adventure” style books. You were just drawn to it. I was drawn to it. But then, I was a young, impressionable lad at the time, and just learning the ways of the world. Thankfully, the heyday of Sword & Sandal films was just getting into swing and I had a legion of warriors with magic and sharpened steel to lead me. Hawk, however, was just the door man, a “gateway drug” type of movie….clean enough for kids, dirty enough to give them urges towards long hair, leather pants, and Manowar records.

Originally shown on TV in the UK, Hawk the Slayer was picked up for a limited theatrical distribution in 1980. At that time, yes, movies like this were shown theatrically, it was the end of the “good ol’ days” when just about anything could get a theatrical release. A short while later it would end up on VHS and into my grubby little mitts.
I was completely enamored. Here was everything I wanted to see: Continue reading

50 Years of Time and Space: The Doctor Who Anniversary

**There will be spoilers in the article, so if you have not yet seen the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who yet, I would advise not reading this!**

DW50 BannerSaturday, November 23rd was a very important day for Whovians all around the world. Especially for myself. This was also the first time ever that Doctor Who was simultaneously broadcasted to over 75 countries all over the globe, as Doctor Who was celebrating its 50th anniversary.

To be quite honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect from what was going to be one of the most important episodes in Doctor Who history. I was excited, of course, (even switched shifts with a co-worker so that I could have that day free), but at the same time I was nervous that my expectations were too high and that the episode wouldn’t be as amazing as I’d dreamt it would be.

For over a year, Whovians were speculating who would be in it and what the plot would be. How many Doctors will they bring back? Will we get to see Continue reading

An Evening With John Barrowman at NYCC.

It’s 6:30pm at NYCC and folks were either at The Walking Dead panel (which I am pretty bummed out that I missed) or the John Barrowman panel. Unfortunately, the two were at the same exact time, and it was a tough decision, but after that very quick hour with Barrowman, I knew I had made the right call.

John entered the stage and the entire room cheered, applauded, and stood up out of their seats in order to get a glimpse at the one and only, John Barrowman. He was bursting with energy, and put a smile on everyone’s face instantly.  John is such a geek fanboy and you could see how appreciative he was that everyone was there for him, and even said, “I didn’t expect that I was going to be so popular here!”

Before he began his Q&A session with the fans, he took out his tablet and announced that at every panel he makes a video to send to his mom & dad (cue the entire room’s “awwwww”). While he was attempting to set up the video on his tablet, he was still engaging the audience and cracking jokes because he knew time was precious at a large event like this.

As he finally got his video feature set up, he requested that we do two things. The first was to cheer and wave hello to his mom & dad, and the second request was for his niece who recently had a baby named Finnegan, and he wanted us to say “Hi, Finnegan!” When he was explaining this to us, he accidentally said, “Can you all shite… SHITE? Actually, when she had the baby she felt like she was having a big shite, I can tell you that!” I would pay to see this man Continue reading
