Let me start off by saying that I have, unfortunately, never been to SDCC or Nerd HQ. I absolutely love going to conventions (mostly local – NYCC, Philly Comic Con..etc.), but Continue reading

Making friends again with Veronica Mars
Veronica Mars is a show that I didn’t really start watching until recently over the last few years. The name kind of turned me off when it came out. On the surface it looked like a show that I just wouldn’t appreciate because I was far removed from High School. I have no problem admitting when I’m wrong, and boy was I wrong. This show unfortunately was killed off well before it should have, but at least it had 2 really good seasons and one so-so one (Damn you Piz!). With the modern miracle of crowdfunding we now have a true follow-up to the show.
For many fans, I’m sure lyrics to the TV show’s theme song are a perfect way to describe how they feel about Veronica Mars. “A long time ago, we used to be friends, but I haven’t thought of you lately at all”. The movie itself shares the same narrative theme. The movie starts out with Veronica in NY, having left Neptune after her first year at Hearst College 9 years ago. Due to reasons I won’t spoil, she travels back to Neptune to help an old friend she hadn’t spoken to that entire time.
300: Rise of an Empire Rises Above It’s Predecessor
Going into 300: Rise of an Empire, I was a bit skeptical about the movie. The first 300 movie I saw 3 times in the theater. The visuals at the time were ground breaking and hadn’t been seen before. The fight sequences felt like something out of Asian cinema, with its gore and intensity. Looking at the trailer for the new movie it looked like it was going to be more of the same . . . but 8 years later. Over those 8 years we have seen other movies use similar action sequence techniques so it no longer feels new or fresh. Somehow with that against him, director Noam Murro managed to create a movie that surpassed Zack Snyder’s original.

Dave’s Time at Rhode Island Comic Con 2013
There are a few good reasons why I was really excited about RI Comic Con 2013. First, it was really close to my house. But more importantly, it had an amazing and huge guest list. Here’s a list of just some of the awesome guests:
- Danny Glover (Die Hard of course)
- Billie Dee Williams (y’know)
- Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell Smith (both leads from Weird Science)
- William Zabka and Martin Kove (Johnny and Sensei Kreese from The Karate Kid… “sweep the leg”)
- Sam Jones (Flash freakin’ Gordon!)
- Sarah Douglass and Jack O’Halloran (baddies from Superman 2)
- Every single bounty hunter from Star Wars! (first ever together… collect them all!)
- Alan Oppenheimer (Skeletor, Masters of the Universe)
- Larry Kenny (Liono, Lord of the Thundercats)
- Jeremy Shada (Finn from Adventure Time)
- …and a zillion more. …a zillion.
