The Avengers' Maria Hill

Written by: Christopher Lee

The internet famous Marvel Digital Media’s Ryan Penagos or as he’s known to his legion of followers, “Agent M” (who is very vocal about his love of tacos), posted these photos of S.H.E.I.L.D. agent Maria Hill (played by Cobie Smulders) in the upcoming “Avengers” movie. Pretty darned awesome and very true to her comic book counterpart if you ask me. If all the attitude that comes through in these pics translates to the movie, she’ll be rather excellent indeed.

Also, is it just me or is that the S.H.E.I.L.D. Helicarrier in that screen graphic on the top pic?! Cool!

Benedict Cumberbatch laughs in the face of Martin Freeman's Bilbo Baggins!

Silly Freemanses

Recently, MTV news caught up with Benedict Cumberbatch and asked him about his work on Peter Jackson’s upcoming film adaptation of “The Hobbit”. Among his adulation of working with Jackson and a brief bit about his role(s) in the movie he told of a funny incident with his friend and “Sherlock” co-star, Martin Freeman.

“It was great. I got to hang out with him, and I kept a straight face for a bit and then I started giggling because I know Martin, I don’t know Bilbo,” said Cumberbatch

Aside from his giggle fits, he did have a bit of admiration for Freeman, saying, “For Martin to be sitting there playing Bilbo is amazing. He’s going to be amazing, he’s going to be fantastic in this film.”

All laughs aside, I’m incredibly excited for this movie. I can’t wait to see how they use him as “Smaug” seeing as he not only did the voice, but mo-capped the performance.

Here’s a the actual “interview” clip:

The Avengers!! Exciting Movie. "Meh" Poster.

Marvel release this new “Avengers” poster. Whereas I’m VERY excited to see this movie, and it does look like it’s going to be a wild ride, I just can’t stand the posters they’ve released. It all looks too cartoony, photoshopped, hokey, ect.

Seriously, the Iron Man movies have made enough money and the character’s marketing itself spans a wide enough scope that the character in full suit is recognizable. I don’t need to see RDJ’s mug in this poster. It ruins the whole thing for me. I mean, it’s not going to stop me from throwing down my, what is it now $15 for a movie? But, with all the amazing artists marvel has under their belt, can’t we just get one, really amazing poster for this film? Is that too much to ask?

Star Wars: The Clone Wars – Don't knock it til you've tried it!

If you’re a Star Wars fan, you’ve been in heated discussions not only about the movies, original or prequel, but of aspect of all the other medium as well.
Many I’ve spoken to have dismissed the “Clone Wars” tv series as a kids show to be put on the backburner indefinitely, no doubt, in large part, to the fact that it’s based in the environment of the almost universally reviled prequel films.

I say now, as I’ve said for some time, don’t do that to yourself.

The “Clone Wars” is a treat. It’s a well made and planned out series that caters to the fans. It has a linear story format that, at times, seems above the age for which it seems targeted. Characters die. I don’t mean just faceless clones and robots, I mean real storyline characters that you grow an attachment to are killed off in this series. It’s relatively violent, more than you’d expect. Not simply lightsaber battles either. It’s well acted as well. Oddly, the computer generated characters seem to have more life than they did in the actual movies.

“Sorry I am, young Skywalker. Directing, one of Lucas’ strong points, is not.”

There’s quite a bit of fan service to be had as well. Nods and appearances to locales and characters you might not expect are given aplenty. There is a two part episode in season three that is a tribute to King Kong and Godzilla respectively. There is, as well, a tribute episode to the “Seven Samurai” that was rather well done, giving a wonderful nod to what is generally well known as the samurai films of Akira Kurosawa that Lucas claims formed the base of Star Wars itself.

BEHOLD!!! The Zillo Beast!! (Yes, that’s what it was actually called, just in case anyone didn’t know it was a Godzilla nod already…and LOOK AT THOSE TANKS!)

I could go on about how much I enjoy this series, but instead, I think you should check it out and form your own opinion. Don’t just dismiss something without giving it due chance. If you’re a Star Wars fan, you owe it to yourself to discover some good that has come out of the prequels.

Oh…and did I mention, Darth Maul is BACK!! Watch the trailer and be excited!

The REAL "Real Genius"

Ever seen “Real Genius”? Ya know, that awesome 80’s movie that was arguably the best thing Val Kilmer has ever done and cemented William Atherton in our hearts and minds as one of cinema’s greatest assholes? (hmmm….Jerry Hathaway or Templeton Peck? Who was the bigger douche? That’s an argument for another post)

Anyway, there was a character in “Real Genius” that was, although no where near the lead, ended up as the most memorable.

That character’s name? Lazlo Hollyfeld. (played by Jon Gries of future “Napoleon Dynamite” fame, who it might seem is more prolific now than the movie’s star, Val Kilmer)

Well, Ol’ Lazlo was this manic genius who lived in a sort of “batcave” in the basement of the science genius school that was the setting for the film. I won’t spoil it for you, but I’ll just say he’s REALLY smart in a way most people could only wish to be.

The fella in this video is the closest thing to a real world Lazlo Hollyfeld I’ve ever scene, he even kind of looks like him! But who is this wonderful genius? I’ll let you read his own words:

I’m Jaimie… Mantzel. I like to do a lot of things. I’m kinda like…. hmmm… who am I like…. Oh, I’m like a cross between MacGuyver (ya, I like to build stuff), and that guy in fight club (not because I fight, because I’m reclusive, resist the system, and live life my own way). Wait, no no. I’m more like a cross between Stewy from family guy, and… uhhh… well, people say “run, forest, run” to me a lot. That might just be because I run a lot, though. OK, I don’t know who I’m like. I’m a super-human space alien monster with a brain the size of a planet. Now stop pressuring me!!!!

So like… does anyone want to hire me to build a giant robot? huh huh?

Yes sir. Very cool. If I had the money, I would hire you to build TWO giant robots. One for each of us. Then we would battle in them til they were obliterated…

….then, we would build more.
