Twin Peaks 20th Anniversary Art Exhibit!!!!

Written by: Christopher Lee

Twin Peaks Art Exhibit @ Copronason Gallery

Sadly, this exhibit is approximately 2,800 miles away from me. But that doesn’t mean some of you can’t go!

Showcasing work based on/inspired by this legendary (and personal favorite) TV series, the exhibit features some great contributions from David Lynch (the creator of the show), Grace Zabriskie (who played “the eerily psychic mother of the doomed Laura Palmer”, and quite a few others including a personal favorite artist of mine, the awesome Scott C. (check out his site/tumblr here, “Great Showdowns”).

Check out some of the pieces, they’re awesome!

Laura Palmer, “Wrapped in Plastic” (which was the name of the Twin Peaks fanzine back inna day)

The classic, "Wrapped in Plastic" Laura Palmer

A great sort of “Evil Angel” Laura:

A wonderful rendering by Chris Mars of David Lynch himself as FBI Regional Bureau Chief Gordon Cole:

FBI Regional Bureau Chief Gordon Cole.

One of my personal favorites, “Late Night at the Double R” featuring Laura with James Hurley on his motorcycle. (Incidentally, James Marshall who played James Hurley on “Twin Peaks” will also have art displayed, I don’t know the particular artist of this piece, it may very well be his, gorgeous either way).

Late Night at the Double R

An awesome stylistic depiction of the “Red Room” and inhabitants of the “Black Lodge” by Josh Agle, aka “Shag”:

*NEED* this as a poster:

I will catch you with my DEATH BAG!

and lastly, for now, for here, Scott C.’s wonderful depiction of a little down time in the Red Room of the Black Lodge with Agent Dale Cooper and The Man from Another Place.

Spring Cleaning in the Black Lodge

So awesome. I hope/wish/pray that this exhibit can/will somehow reach New York City. If you go pick me up a print!!

John Carter (of Mars…..sorta)

I finally got out to see “John Carter” this week and yes, I’ll say it, this movie is good.

No, it’s not going to blow you away. No, it’s not anything you haven’t seen before. Yes, it’s a lot like things you’ve seen before.

Why?

Because darned near movie or TV show in the Sci-Fi genre that you’ve seen in at LEAST 50+ years has either been inspired by or has ripped off the tales of “Barsoom” by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Given that alone, give the film, the story, the respect it’s due. Gene Rodenberry did. Publicly. When he spoke of his inspirations for “Star Trek”. Many others have as well.

Could I sit here and simply review the movie? Sure. But I’m not going to do that per se.

The difficult thing with this movie is despite just saying “OMG it’s so good! You need to go see it!”, is telling people *why* they should give it a go. There’s few ways to describe it that don’t sound like “Avatar” or a sort of reversed “Superman” or much everything else. I honestly find myself hard pressed to do so, and therein lies, likely, it’s failure.

How does one make an audience excited for a film that, despite it’s pedigree, is based on a 100 year old story that has somewhat faded into relative obscurity in the eyes of all but the more hardcore geeks?

I suppose simple word of mouth is the best bet. Perhaps, blatantly advertising and chest-beating that this is the story that inspired the genre almost entirely as we know it.  I also suppose that releasing it a mere week before a darned near guaranteed blockbuster (“Hunger Games”) wasn’t the best idea either.

At this point, the best thing to do is judge for yourself. Don’t dismiss it based solely on the critics (actually, do yourself a favor and stop listening to critics all together….except me, of course, but I’m not a professional…yet, and when I do become a pro, feel free to stop listening to me and support another up-and-comer!). Go to a matinee (incidentally, this is a GREAT Sunday Morning film), leave your expectations at the concession stand, and check it out. The least I can guarantee you is an enjoyable, pulpy, classic sci-fi adventure. Personally, I can never have enough of them.

If simple reasoning doesn’t work, just lookit this guy, he’s in the film. His name is Woola. He’s kind of like a giant, sweet, super fast, super loyal bulldog..ish….thing….BUT HE’S SO CUTE AND AWESOME YOU MUST LOVE HIM!! (fyi, this is the concept art for Woola. The finished character is pretty much 90% the same as this with VERY slight alterations that make him more “book-authentic”)

WOOLA!!!

"ParaNorman" is one of the summer movies you don't want to miss!

Written by: Christopher Lee

The next few months are going to be crazy times in the theaters for geeks, nerds, dweebs and spaz’s, but let’s not let all the blockbusters take our focus away from some of the “smaller” films that might otherwise slip under the radar, like “ParaNorman” which comes out on August 17th, 2012 from Laika Entertainment, the studio that brought us “Coraline” and “The Corpse Bride”.

“ParaNorman” tells the tale of young Norman Babcock who is your stereotypical “Weird Kid” who gets put down by his family and picked on at school. The difference here lies in the odd ability young Norman has for communicating with the dead.

This of course leads him to all sorts of issues that a kid his age shouldn’t have to deal with, but nothing like the sort of problem that’s coming when an evil witch spirit casts a spell to raise the dead and rule the world. Her plan might come to fruition if not for the heroic efforts of the reluctant little hero.

Okay, I’ll be the first to admit. The plot is/seems a bit “done”, cliche’d, and contrived. It really seems like the studio just wanted to make another “creepy kid’s movie” and having run out of ideas and not wanting to deliberately rip off Edward Gorey, instead ripped off Peter Jackson. Really, this movie looks like the “Frighteners” for kids (and Hot Topic patrons). Not to mention all the obvious stereotypes. C’mon, haven’t we had enough of the “friend of the misfit hero is a dopey fat kid”? I’m sure that if it wasn’t that, it’d probably be a ginger. I mean, everyone knows the only hero dork in pop-culture who has a best friend that’s not an idiot, socially inept, or of obvious physical difference than the norm, is Spider-Man (I refer to Harry Osbourne if you didn’t get that), though, granted, as much as I love the new series, “Ultimate Spider-Man”s Miles Morales’ best friend is a chubby asian nerd…stereotype much? Okay, okay, that’s a different article all together.

All that being said, none of it means that I don’t want to see “ParaNorman”, mind you. It still looks fun, and I honestly think going into it with lower expectations will let me enjoy it a bit more than if I expected something great and new. Your thoughts?

The Avengers' Maria Hill

Written by: Christopher Lee

The internet famous Marvel Digital Media’s Ryan Penagos or as he’s known to his legion of followers, “Agent M” (who is very vocal about his love of tacos), posted these photos of S.H.E.I.L.D. agent Maria Hill (played by Cobie Smulders) in the upcoming “Avengers” movie. Pretty darned awesome and very true to her comic book counterpart if you ask me. If all the attitude that comes through in these pics translates to the movie, she’ll be rather excellent indeed.

Also, is it just me or is that the S.H.E.I.L.D. Helicarrier in that screen graphic on the top pic?! Cool!

Benedict Cumberbatch laughs in the face of Martin Freeman's Bilbo Baggins!

Silly Freemanses

Recently, MTV news caught up with Benedict Cumberbatch and asked him about his work on Peter Jackson’s upcoming film adaptation of “The Hobbit”. Among his adulation of working with Jackson and a brief bit about his role(s) in the movie he told of a funny incident with his friend and “Sherlock” co-star, Martin Freeman.

“It was great. I got to hang out with him, and I kept a straight face for a bit and then I started giggling because I know Martin, I don’t know Bilbo,” said Cumberbatch

Aside from his giggle fits, he did have a bit of admiration for Freeman, saying, “For Martin to be sitting there playing Bilbo is amazing. He’s going to be amazing, he’s going to be fantastic in this film.”

All laughs aside, I’m incredibly excited for this movie. I can’t wait to see how they use him as “Smaug” seeing as he not only did the voice, but mo-capped the performance.

Here’s a the actual “interview” clip:
