Where to begin? As soon as you step into the NY Comic Con, you are assaulted by the experiential overstimulation. Fortunately, I had a loose plan from the start. Continue reading

Comic Book Covers 10/10/2012
This week there was a large number of great covers released. I realized I would have a really hard time narrowing it down to my 3 favorite. Then I realized this is my article and I can do what I want. Besides, far be it for me to deprive you of some great comic book art.
Before Watchmen: Dr. Manhattan #2
Adam Hughes is mostly known for drawing pretty ladies, and doing it very well. His runs on books like Catwoman and Wonder Woman led to some really fantastic covers. Many of them are collected in the book “Cover Run: The DC Comics art of Adam Hughes”, which is well worth a purchase. It’s nice to see him work on a book focused on a male character, although he has been managing to sneak the ladies into the covers. I really like the classic feel of this cover, along with Silk Spectre’s perfectly positioned head.
Red She-Hulk #58
Variant Cover by Skottie Young
I should probably state that any week where there is a cover by Skottie Young, it has about a 95% chance of making this list. I absolutely love his work, especially when he’s drawing the baby version of characters. On top of that, this cover features Aaron Stack, also known as Machine Man. If you don’t know who he is, he’s a surly robot who likes beer. Check out Next Wave: Agents of H.A.T.E. by Warren Ellis in which he features prominently. You won’t be disappointed.
Uncanny Avengers #1
Variant Cover by Skottie Young
I chose two different covers for Uncanny Avengers #1 because I liked them so much. As I previously mentioned Skottie Young baby characters get the thumbs up from me. The Deadpool cover I like because, well it’s Deadpool, and the stuff written on the board behind him makes me laugh.
Batman #13
I also chose two covers for Batman 13, and I don’t think you can blame me. This month starts the story arc “Death of the Family”, and guess who’s back? Scott Snyder’s Batman is pretty easily one of the best books DC puts out, and one of the best on the shelves every month. Night of the Owls, the previous story arc, was a great read, and I’m really looking forward to this. If you’re a Batman fan you should really check it out.
New Animated Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (TDKR) was originally written back in 1986, and still to this day remains one of my favorite comics ever made. It put Frank Miller on the map for me as an amazing story-teller. Honestly I was never a huge fan of Frank Miller’s art style, but his writing is phenomenal. Continue reading
Late to the Party: Alias (the comic series)
Alias: Ultimate Collection Volumes 1 & 2
Written by Brian Michael Bendis – Art by Michael Gaydos
(28 issues originally published between November 2001 and January 2004)
A couple of years ago I picked up the two Omnibus editions of Bendis’ run on Daredevil. I absolutely devoured them and was salivating for more. It is easily one of the best runs of comics I have ever had the pleasure of reading. In my search for more I kept coming across mentions of Alias. Other writers and people in the industry would sing the praises of this Eisner nominated comic. It got to the point where I felt I couldn’t read an article about Brian Michael Bendis without Alias being brought up.
Recently I decided to see what all the fuss was about. Continue reading
The Line is Drawn for Comic Book Art
Not that they need the extra traffic, but I really have to give it up to the Comic Book Resources website. They consistently post great, informative articles and are one of the best places to get the latest comics news. But that’s not what this post is about.
This post is about two things, CBR’s “Comics Should Be Good” blog, specifically its weekly series called “The Line Is Drawn” where a group of artists (about 16 regulars) post artwork based on suggestions to the blog’s weekly topic on their twitter account. This week’s was “…come up with a sidekick for a superhero who’s never had an official sidekick”, which leads me to the other topic of this particular post. A bit of praise to a good, old friend of mine, and a fantastic artist, John Trumbull.
I met John while performing in the local Rocky Horror show. He had recently graduated from Joe Kubert’s art school at the time. In all these years, I’d never really seen much of his art, save for bits and pieces he showed us, or posted in the early innerwebs days.
As of late, he has been a regular artist for the “Line is Drawn” series and I have consistently found myself more and more impressed and proud of my friend. This week’s piece, however, is his best yet. But then, I’ve said that with each new piece he posts.
