Recently I’ve been having serious thoughts about canceling my PS4 pre-order from Amazon. There are fewer and fewer games at launch that I’m interested in with the recent game delay announcements of Drive Club and Watch Dogs. I know I will probably get a PS4 at some point but I’m not entirely sure I need one right now. One of the many things the PS4 still has going for it are the non-retail PSN games. There are many games that will be downloadable day 1, but a lot of those games are either available on PC or another platform already. I know I’m definitely keeping my Xbox One pre-order because Microsoft has a few exclusives I know I want to play, and I like the TV integration aspect of the system. I decided to create a comparison chart using IGN’s launch title wiki to compare the retail games side by side.

Just Dance 2014 |

Killzone Shadow Fall |

Knack |

Yellow highlighted games are completely exclusive retail games coming to their respective platform. Many of these games will be on other platforms including the previous generation, PC, and the Wii U.
Everything I’ve seen of Knack, looks like it could be a PS3 game that I wouldn’t play even if it was a free PSN+ game. I am interested in Killzone, but I wouldn’t buy a system for it. I don’t think I would buy it even if I did have a PS4. I would probably try renting it. I played Killzone 2 all the way through and I enjoyed it, but I only played through a little bit of Killzone 3 before I quit. On the Xbox One I will definitely buy Forza 4, and Dead Rising 3. I had put many hours into both of their previous installments, and everything I’ve seen so far makes me believe I’ll do the same with these. I’d like to rent RYSE, and Fighter Within just to give them a try, but I probably won’t purchase them.
To be fair there are a few ps4 exclusives that aren’t retail games. One game I kind of want to play is Resogun, a side scrolling shooter. Then there is Switch Galaxy Ultra which is made for both the Vita and the PS4 but I’ll count it anyway even though it is more of a mobile game (the original version of the game was android based).
Lastly there is the pack in game called Playroom which is more a series of tech demos to show off what the system can do. Unfortunately some of the more interesting demos were made for the PS4 Eye camera which is no longer bundled with the system. It will be interesting to see how this is handled if you don’t have the Eye.
Also, if you don’t already have a PC that can play games, the PS4 has many titles that won’t be available on console anywhere else. One of Sony’s biggest selling points for the PS4 is their indie game initiative. They have been talking with a lot of smaller development companies to bring their games to the PS4. I was onboard with that idea initially, because of the hope and promise it brought with it. Unfortunately when I look at IGN’s full PS4 release list, the reality of it sinks in. The games being brought over by indie developers are games that have already available to play on PC, in some cases for over a full year. I didn’t play them then for a reason. Why would I want to play them now?
I don’t think the PS4 is a bad system, but I don’t think the launch games available are games that I want to play right now. I may keep my pre-order but there is a pretty good chance I’m going to cancel it. I’m still on the fence, and now you know why. With all that info I just gave you, what will you do?
I didn’t even bother to pre-order the PS4 mainly because I didn’t see a lot of games at release that even interested me. Like you, I enjoyed Killzone 2 but didn’t care enough for Killzone 3 to finish it. Hell I mainly only bought my PS3 for the Uncharted series and the God of War series. If they decided to announce another title in either of those series (which I’m sure they will in time) I’m sure it will increase my interest in getting a PS4. But until then, it will probably be a good year or so after release before I look into getting the PS4. I’ve almost always been an Xbox guy and I’ll be getting the Xbox One at release…. even though I still have close to 30-35 games for my 360 that I own that haven’t even touched my console yet haha
